The Karnataka government has announced new regulations mandating hotels to set up a grievance redressal mechanism and dedicated food storage rooms to improve safety standards.
The state government issued an order tightening food‑safety norms for hotels across Karnataka, requiring each establishment to create a formal complaint system through which guests and staff can report hygiene or safety concerns.
Hotels must also maintain separate, temperature‑controlled storage rooms for perishable items, aligning with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines. Regular inspections will be stepped up and non‑compliant premises will face penalties.
The directive comes after a series of food‑borne illness reports in the state, prompting officials to act swiftly. An online portal has been launched for consumers to lodge complaints, with a stipulated response time for resolution.
Industry associations have welcomed the clarity but caution that smaller hotels may need financial support to upgrade infrastructure. The government has signalled possible subsidies or low‑interest loans to aid compliance.
