Karnataka imposes one-year ban on non-dairy paneer over health concerns

Karnataka's health ministry announced a statewide ban on the sale and distribution of non‑dairy paneer for a period of one year, saying the product poses potential health hazards. The move comes after a state‑run survey detected higher microbial counts and possible allergenic compounds in plant‑based paneer alternatives. The prohibition, effective from the date of notification, applies to all retail outlets, supermarkets and online platforms operating within Karnataka. Producers of soy, almond, coconut or other plant‑based paneer have been instructed to suspend manufacturing until further safety evaluations are completed. Officials said the ban will be reviewed after twelve months, and consumers are advised to opt for traditional dairy paneer in the interim.
