Karnataka drafts law to restrict government teachers to classroom duties only
The state education department has prepared a draft law to ensure government school teachers are employed solely for teaching, aiming to improve educational quality.
The Karnataka education department has prepared a draft of a new law that would limit the deployment of government school teachers to teaching duties alone. Under the proposed legislation, teachers would no longer be assigned to non‑teaching departmental tasks.
The draft law is intended to enhance the quality of education by allowing teachers to focus exclusively on classroom instruction and related academic responsibilities. By removing ancillary duties, the department expects teachers to have more time for lesson planning, student interaction, and professional development.
If enacted, the law would apply to all government‑run schools across the state, standardising the role of teachers and preventing the diversion of teaching staff to administrative or other non‑educational functions. The education department believes this measure will lead to measurable improvements in student outcomes.
The draft is currently under review and will be presented to the state cabinet for approval before it can be formally introduced in the legislature.
