Karnataka Allows Teachers to Use ‘Tr’ Prefix Before Their Names

The state government of Karnataka issued an official circular authorising teachers to adopt the prefix “Tr” before their names, joining the ranks of titles such as “Dr” and “Prof”. The move is intended to formally recognise the professional status of educators across the state’s schools and colleges.

According to the circular, the new designation may be used in all official correspondence, name‑plates, email signatures and other professional contexts. The guideline does not alter any existing qualifications; it simply provides a uniform way for teachers to present themselves publicly.

Implementation will begin from the next academic session, with schools instructed to update name‑plates and directories accordingly. Early feedback from teachers’ associations has been largely positive, with many welcoming the added professional visibility.

The education department will monitor the adoption of the prefix and may issue further clarifications if needed, ensuring that the practice aligns with existing norms for academic titles.
