India’s monsoon deficit for July has been cleared, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the total rainfall recorded so far is still 16% below the seasonal average for the month.
The IMD noted that while the deficit that had been projected for July has been eliminated, the overall rainfall pattern has been weaker than expected. The lower rainfall figures are spread across several regions, with some areas receiving significantly less precipitation.
Monsoon analysts point out that a 16% shortfall can affect the water availability for irrigation and groundwater recharge, especially in the northern and central parts of the country where crops are in critical stages.
Agricultural officials warn that the reduced rainfall may pose challenges for the upcoming sowing season, and farmers are advised to plan for supplementary irrigation where possible.
