Indian singer Joi Barua, known for the hit ‘O Meri Laila’, is working with NASA on a project that turns supernova data into a musical composition.

Veteran playback singer Joi Barua, whose song “O Meri Laila” topped charts a few years ago, has taken an unexpected turn into the realm of space science. The artist has been invited to collaborate with scientists at NASA to translate the electromagnetic signatures of exploding stars, known as supernovae, into an auditory experience.

The joint effort aims to blend Barua’s melodic sensibility with raw cosmic data, creating a piece that both celebrates the grandeur of the universe and introduces listeners to the science behind stellar explosions. Barua said the project allows him to explore new creative horizons while bringing public attention to astrophysical phenomena.

NASA’s outreach team views the collaboration as a novel way to engage the public, especially younger audiences, by merging art and astronomy. The final composition is expected to be released later this year as part of a broader educational initiative.
