The Jammu and Kashmir police have issued a warning about new cyber scams that use AI‑generated voice clones to impersonate relatives and extract money.

In a recent advisory, the Jammu and Kashmir police cautioned residents about a surge in cyber fraud that exploits artificial‑intelligence tools to clone human voices. The warning, circulated through official channels, highlights that scammers are using sophisticated AI software to mimic the speech patterns of known contacts, such as family members or friends, and then request urgent financial assistance.

According to the police, the fraudulent calls typically begin with a familiar greeting, followed by a convincing request for money to be transferred to a bank account or digital wallet. Victims are often urged to share one‑time passwords (OTPs) or other authentication details, believing they are helping a loved one in distress.

Authorities have advised the public to verify any such request through a secondary communication method, refrain from sharing OTPs, and immediately report suspicious calls to the cyber crime cell. The police also emphasized that genuine officials never ask for confidential credentials over the phone.

The advisory notes that similar AI‑driven voice‑cloning scams have been reported in other Indian states, prompting a nationwide push for greater digital literacy. Jammu and Kashmir’s cyber crime unit is reportedly strengthening its monitoring capabilities and collaborating with technology partners to trace the source of these fraudulent calls.

Police officials reiterated that prompt reporting can help prevent financial loss and aid investigations, urging citizens to stay vigilant against evolving digital threats.
