The Jammu and Kashmir administration is evaluating a multiversity framework aimed at integrating the region’s universities with research centres, officials said.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that it is studying a "multiversity" model designed to create a coordinated network of the state’s higher‑education institutions and research bodies. The proposal seeks to streamline academic programmes, share research infrastructure and promote interdisciplinary projects across universities, colleges and specialised research centres.
According to officials, the model would enable joint funding mechanisms, facilitate student and faculty exchanges, and provide a unified platform for industry collaborations. By linking disparate institutions, the administration hopes to boost research output, attract external investment and improve the quality of education in the region.
The education department has formed a task force comprising senior university officials, scientists and policy experts to draft a detailed implementation plan. The task force is expected to submit its recommendations to the chief minister’s office within the next few months, after which a pilot phase may be launched at select campuses.
If approved, the multiversity framework could serve as a template for other Indian states seeking to modernise their higher‑education ecosystems while addressing the unique challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir’s academic community.
