The Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir has instructed all government departments to adopt budgeting practices that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Secretary issued a formal directive today, asking every state department to incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their budgeting processes. The order emphasizes that future fiscal plans must be evaluated against the 17 global goals, ranging from poverty eradication to climate action, to ensure that public spending contributes to sustainable outcomes.

Officials were asked to review existing budget proposals and modify allocations so that they reflect measurable SDG indicators. The secretariat will monitor compliance through periodic reports and will provide technical guidance to departments unfamiliar with the SDG framework.

The move is part of the union territory's broader effort to mainstream sustainable development in governance and to attract funding from national and international agencies that prioritize SDG‑aligned projects. Authorities expect the new budgeting approach to improve transparency, promote inclusive growth, and better address the region's socio‑economic challenges.
