Jharkhand Suspends Over 4 Lakh Inactive Ration Cards, Launches Verification Drive

The Jharkhand government has temporarily deactivated more than 400,000 ration cards that were found inactive and has begun a fresh verification exercise to update the public distribution system.
Jharkhand's Food and Civil Supplies Department announced the suspension of over 4 lakh ration cards that had shown no activity for a prolonged period. The move aims to curb misuse of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ensure that subsidies reach genuine beneficiaries.
A state‑wide verification drive has been launched, with officials instructed to contact cardholders, collect updated documents and re‑activate only those who can prove current eligibility. The verification will be carried out through ward‑level officers and online portals over the next six weeks.
The department expects the exercise to tighten the PDS ledger, reduce leakages and improve food security for the poor. Officials have urged residents to cooperate promptly, assuring that legitimate beneficiaries will have their cards reinstated once verification is completed.
