Jharkhand reiterates call for authority to impose mining cess

The Jharkhand government has again urged the central government to grant it the power to levy a cess on mining activities in the state.
The state government of Jharkhand has reiterated its demand to the Union government for statutory authority to impose a mining cess, aiming to boost revenue from its mineral‑rich districts.
Officials say the cess would target operations in coal, iron ore and other minerals, and the additional funds would support infrastructure, rehabilitation of affected communities, and environmental safeguards.
The demand was voiced during a meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Mines, where the state highlighted that existing royalties are insufficient to address the fiscal and social costs of mining.
Jharkhand's Chief Minister's office noted that similar cess mechanisms exist in other mineral‑rich states and that granting the authority would align with the central government's push for greater resource‑based taxation.
The central government has not yet responded, and the issue is expected to be discussed in upcoming inter‑governmental talks.
