The Jammu & Kashmir government plans to invest between ₹1,000 and ₹1,200 crore in the Khelo India programme for the 2026‑31 period, aiming to boost sports infrastructure and talent development.
The state government of Jammu & Kashmir announced that it will earmark between ₹1,000 crore and ₹1,200 crore for the Khelo India scheme covering the 2026‑31 financial cycle. The allocation is part of the upcoming state budget and is intended to be released in phases over the six‑year period.
The funds are slated to upgrade existing sports facilities, build new training centres, and provide scholarships and coaching support to promising athletes across the union territory. Officials said the investment aligns with the central government's goal of creating a robust grassroots sports ecosystem.
The sports department will oversee the disbursement, with priority given to schools, colleges and rural talent identification programs. Authorities expect the enhanced infrastructure to raise participation rates and improve performance of J&K athletes in national competitions.
If implemented as planned, the programme could position Jammu & Kashmir as a model for sports development among Indian states, complementing earlier initiatives that focused on winter sports and indigenous games.
