The Union government has confirmed that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir will become a member of the Inter-State Council, enhancing centre‑state coordination.

The central government announced that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir will be appointed as a member of the Inter-State Council (ISC). The decision was disclosed in an official statement, signalling the government's intent to involve the union territory more directly in the council's deliberations.

The Inter-State Council, a constitutional body chaired by the Prime Minister, provides a platform for dialogue between the Union and the states and union territories. It reviews policies, resolves disputes and facilitates cooperative federalism across the country.

Including the J&K Lieutenant Governor in the ISC is expected to improve coordination on matters ranging from development projects to law‑and‑order issues in the region. Officials said the move will help align the union territory's priorities with national programmes.

The appointment underscores the government's broader strategy of integrating Jammu and Kashmir more closely with the rest of India through institutional participation.
