The Jammu and Kashmir administration announced a new mechanism aimed at curbing illegal extraction of forest produce, citing increased enforcement and monitoring.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has unveiled a comprehensive mechanism to tackle the growing problem of illegal extraction of forest produce across the state. The new framework, announced by the Chief Minister’s office, seeks to strengthen surveillance, improve coordination among forest officials, and impose stricter penalties on offenders.
Under the plan, forest departments will deploy additional patrols in high‑risk areas and use satellite imagery to monitor deforestation activities. A dedicated task force will also be established to investigate complaints and prosecute those found guilty of illegal harvesting.
The government highlighted that the initiative comes after a series of reports indicating a rise in illegal logging and collection of medicinal plants, which threaten biodiversity and local livelihoods. Officials said that the new measures will be backed by increased funding and training for forest rangers.
If successfully implemented, the mechanism is expected to reduce illegal extraction by up to 30% within the first year, the government said, while also ensuring sustainable use of forest resources for future generations.
