Jaisalmer's 200‑km Panchayat Constituency Poses Big Challenge for Candidates

The 200‑km long constituency in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, is making it difficult for candidates to reach voters during the upcoming panchayat elections.

The Rajasthan panchayat elections are set to take place in early December, drawing attention to the state’s 18 districts. Among them, the Jaisalmer constituency stands out for its sheer size, stretching over 200 kilometres across the Thar Desert.

Candidates face a daunting task of covering vast stretches of sand dunes and remote villages, many of which are accessible only by rough tracks. The long distances mean that a single candidate could spend a full day traveling from one end of the constituency to the other.

The logistical challenge translates into higher travel costs and limited time for door‑to‑door campaigning. Parties are reportedly considering mobile vans and satellite offices to bridge the gap, but the terrain remains a significant barrier.

Election officials have acknowledged the difficulty and are exploring measures to ease candidate movement, including the possibility of additional polling stations and support vehicles. The outcome of these efforts will likely influence voter outreach strategies in the region.
