A Jaipur resident discovered that a 15‑gram Lay’s packet held only 4 grams of chips, prompting the state consumer commission to order PepsiCo to pay a nominal compensation of Rs 5.
A resident of Jaipur lodged a complaint after finding that a Lay’s packet labelled as 15 grams contained merely 4 grams of potato chips. The discrepancy was reported to the Rajasthan State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, which took up the case under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act.
The commission examined the packet, verified the weight shortfall, and concluded that the product was mis‑labelled. In its order, the commission directed PepsiCo India, the manufacturer of Lay’s, to compensate the consumer with a nominal amount of Rs 5.
While the monetary award is modest, the ruling underscores the importance of accurate net‑weight declarations on packaged foods and reinforces consumer rights against misleading packaging.
Consumer groups have welcomed the decision, noting that it sets a precedent for stricter enforcement of labelling standards across the food industry in India.
The case also serves as a reminder to manufacturers to ensure that packaging reflects the actual content, thereby maintaining trust among Indian shoppers.
