The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal ruled in favour of a Karnataka farmer who had deposited cash from farm sales, even though the farmer could not produce expense records. The tribunal held that the cash deposits were genuine agricultural income.

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) delivered a ruling that favoured a Karnataka farmer in a case concerning cash deposits made from the sale of farm produce. The farmer had been unable to furnish the usual expense records to substantiate the income claimed from those deposits.

Despite the absence of such documentation, the ITAT concluded that the cash deposits represented legitimate agricultural income and therefore should not be disallowed. The bench emphasized that the burden of proving the nature of the income lies with the tax authorities when the taxpayer demonstrates a genuine farming activity.

The decision provides relief to farmers who may face similar scrutiny over cash transactions from farm sales, reinforcing the principle that lack of expense records does not automatically negate genuine agricultural earnings under Indian tax law.
