At a recent BRICS meeting, Iran advocated for moving away from the US dollar in international trade, while India outlined its cautious support for a multilateral currency framework.
Iran used the platform of the BRICS currency debate to urge member states to reduce reliance on the US dollar, arguing that a diversified monetary system would enhance economic sovereignty and stability. The Iranian delegation highlighted recent steps taken by Tehran to promote the use of its own rial and other regional currencies in bilateral trade.
India, represented by senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Reserve Bank of India, responded by emphasizing the need for a coordinated, multilateral approach. While not dismissing the de‑dollarisation agenda, Indian officials said any shift must be gradual, consensus‑based, and aligned with existing global financial regulations.
Both countries agreed that the discussion reflects broader concerns among emerging economies about the dominance of the dollar. However, concrete proposals or timelines were not presented, leaving the debate open for further deliberation at upcoming BRICS summits.
