Indore city buses provide free rides for women on Rakhi day

On Friday, Indore's municipal bus service offered women free travel for 48 hours to celebrate Rakhi, encouraging safe and affordable mobility.
Indore Municipal Corporation’s transport wing, AICSTL, announced a special scheme for Raksha Bandhan, allowing women passengers to travel on city buses without fare for a continuous 48‑hour period starting Friday. The initiative aims to promote women’s safety and convenience during the festive rush, when many families shop for gifts and sweets.
The free‑ride program covers all regular city bus routes, with drivers instructed to verify female passengers through ID or a simple visual check. Officials said the move is part of a broader effort to make public transport more inclusive and to reduce traffic congestion around market areas that see heightened activity during the festival.
Local women welcomed the gesture, noting that it eases the financial burden of commuting to crowded market hubs such as Sarafa and MTNL Road. The transport authority plans to assess the response and may consider similar schemes for future cultural events.
