Indigenous Farming Practices in Northeast India Face Climate Change Challenge

Traditional agricultural systems that have been handed down through generations across the eight states of Northeast India are now under scrutiny as climate patterns shift. Researchers and local agronomists are documenting practices such as shifting cultivation, mixed cropping, and terrace farming to assess their resilience against erratic rainfall and rising temperatures.

These indigenous methods rely heavily on biodiversity, community knowledge, and low‑input techniques, which contrast sharply with the high‑input, mechanised farming seen elsewhere in the country. Field visits reveal that many villages continue to plant millets, tubers and flood‑tolerant rice varieties that have evolved to thrive in the region's unique micro‑climates.

However, recent climate data indicate longer dry spells and more intense monsoon bursts, threatening the delicate balance that these practices depend upon. Experts suggest that integrating scientific climate forecasts with traditional knowledge could help safeguard food security for the region's tribal populations.

The study calls for policy support to protect and promote these time‑tested farming systems, arguing that they could offer valuable lessons for climate‑adapted agriculture across India.
