Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the country’s metro system has grown from 248 km in five cities to 1,200 km covering 26 cities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted a major milestone in urban transport, noting that India’s metro corridors have expanded from 248 kilometres in five cities to a total of 1,200 kilometres across 26 cities. The growth reflects accelerated investments under recent central and state initiatives aimed at decongesting roads and promoting sustainable mobility.

The expansion includes new lines and extensions in tier‑1 and tier‑2 cities, with projects such as the upcoming phases of the Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kochi metros now operational or under construction. Officials say the extended network will serve millions of commuters daily, reducing travel time and pollution.

Modi emphasized that the government will continue to support metro development through funding, public‑private partnerships, and streamlined clearances. The broader goal, according to the prime minister, is to create a seamless, nationwide rapid transit system that can keep pace with India’s urbanisation and economic growth.
