India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue climbed 15.4% year‑on‑year in July, reaching more than ₹2.11 trillion, according to the Ministry of Finance. The rise reflects a steady uptick in tax compliance and economic activity.
The Ministry of Finance announced that the gross GST collection for July rose 15.4% compared to the same month last year, amounting to ₹2.11 trillion. This marks a significant increase from the ₹1.83 trillion collected in June.
The uptick follows a steady rise in compliance across sectors, with both large enterprises and small businesses reporting higher turnover and tax payments. The government’s efforts to streamline filing processes and enhance digital compliance tools are cited as contributing factors.
Economists note that the growth in GST receipts signals a rebound in domestic consumption and manufacturing output, which had been dampened by earlier pandemic restrictions. The higher revenue also provides the fiscal space needed to fund ongoing infrastructure and welfare schemes.
The Finance Ministry plans to use the surplus to reduce the fiscal deficit and to support targeted subsidies, while maintaining a focus on broadening the tax base and reducing evasion.
