India's Food Regulator Mandates Red Warning Boxes for High Fat, Sugar, Salt Products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will require packaged foods high in fat, sugar or salt to display red warning boxes, aiming to curb unhealthy consumption.
New labeling rules announced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will compel manufacturers to affix a red, rectangular warning box on the front of any packaged product that exceeds prescribed limits for fat, sugar or salt. The label will contain a clear statement such as "High in Fat," "High in Sugar" or "High in Salt," making it easier for consumers to identify nutritionally poor items at a glance.
The move is part of a broader effort to address rising diet‑related health issues, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which have become major public‑health concerns across the country. By providing visible warnings, the regulator hopes to encourage manufacturers to reformulate products and motivate shoppers to choose healthier alternatives.
The FSSAI has set a compliance deadline for food producers, after which non‑conforming products may be barred from retail shelves. Industry bodies have been consulted, and the authority has pledged to monitor the rollout closely to ensure consistent application across all categories of packaged foods.
