Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that extreme poverty in India has fallen over the past twelve years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that India has recorded a measurable reduction in extreme poverty over the last twelve years, referencing recent government data. He said the downward trend signals that the country’s development agenda is reaching its most vulnerable citizens.

The decline, he noted, is the result of sustained economic growth combined with a suite of social‑welfare initiatives launched since 2011, including direct cash transfers, rural employment schemes and expanded access to basic services. These programmes are designed to lift households out of the deepest poverty brackets.

While specific numbers were not disclosed, officials emphasized that the continuing fall in extreme poverty validates the effectiveness of the government’s inclusive policies. The administration pledged to maintain focus on poverty‑alleviation measures to ensure that the remaining sections of society are brought into the growth mainstream.
