India’s diesel exports jump 8% in July, total petroleum shipments hit 5.5 MT

Diesel exports rose to 2.4 million tonnes in July, lifting overall petroleum product shipments to 5.5 million tonnes as refiners benefit from a near‑70% premium over crude.
Government data released this week shows that India exported 2.4 million tonnes of diesel in July, up from 2.2 million tonnes in the same month last year, marking an 8% increase.
Overall petroleum product exports also rose, reaching 5.5 million tonnes in July compared with 5 million tonnes a year earlier.
The surge is largely attributed to diesel fetching a premium of almost 70% over crude oil, making overseas sales highly attractive for Indian refiners.
Despite the profitability, the government’s windfall gains tax on petroleum products remains in effect to ensure adequate domestic inventories.
Analysts expect the trend to continue as long as the price differential between diesel and crude stays wide, supporting India’s position as a growing exporter of refined fuels.
