The Union government has fixed the first phase of the 2027 Census for 25 January to 28 February, while the state of Manipur will not be covered at this stage.

New Delhi – The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the initial enumeration for the 2027 national census will be conducted between 25 January and 28 February. The schedule aligns with the government's plan to complete the first round of data collection within a two‑month window before moving to subsequent phases.

Officials clarified that the current timetable applies to all states and union territories except Manipur, which has been left out for now pending resolution of pending issues. The decision follows ongoing discussions with the state government over data collection protocols and security concerns.

The census, overseen by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, is expected to capture demographic, socio‑economic and housing information for the entire country. The exclusion of Manipur means that its population will be counted in a later phase, once the outstanding matters are settled.

The government reiterated its commitment to a comprehensive and timely census, emphasizing that the schedule may be adjusted if required by operational challenges or legal directives.
