The Ministry of Railways has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 990 crore in Maharashtra aimed at improving train punctuality and capacity.

Newly approved projects totaling Rs 990 crore will focus on track renewal, signalling upgrades and platform extensions across key routes in Maharashtra. The investments are expected to reduce delays and accommodate higher traffic volumes, especially on the busy Mumbai‑Pune corridor.

The Railway Board indicated that the funds will be allocated over the next three fiscal years, with priority given to sections that currently face congestion. Contractors have been invited to submit bids for civil works, electrification and modern signalling systems.

Officials said the enhancements will also support the introduction of additional passenger and freight services, aligning with the government's broader push to modernise the national rail network.

Stakeholders, including state transport officials, welcomed the move, citing potential economic benefits for the region through smoother logistics and improved commuter experience.

The projects will be monitored by a joint committee of the Railway Ministry and Maharashtra’s transport department to ensure timely execution and adherence to safety standards.
