The Indian Railways has moved cement within Jammu and Kashmir for the first time, marking a logistics milestone for the region.

The rail network in Jammu and Kashmir recorded its inaugural internal movement of cement, a development reported by Kashmir Life. This shipment, carried out by the Northern Railway zone, represents the first time cement has been transported by train solely within the state, rather than being moved from other regions or by road.

Officials said the move aims to streamline supply chains for construction projects across the valley, where road transport often faces challenges due to terrain and weather. By using rail, the railway hopes to lower freight costs and ensure a steadier flow of building material to remote districts.

The successful dispatch is being hailed as a step toward greater integration of the state's infrastructure with the national freight network, potentially encouraging further industrial freight operations on the Jammu‑Kashmir railway line.
