The Indian Navy has released a Request for Proposal to procure four Landing Platform Docks, signalling a potential order that could benefit the Mazagon Dock and Cochin Shipyard.
The Indian Navy announced on Tuesday that it has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire four Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). The RFP, which outlines technical specifications and delivery timelines, is expected to open up procurement opportunities for domestic shipbuilders.
LPDs are integral to amphibious warfare, enabling the navy to deploy troops, vehicles and equipment directly onto shorelines. The new vessels will enhance India’s rapid deployment capabilities and support joint operations with the army and air force.
Both Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi have been identified as potential bidders. The RFP has been welcomed by industry analysts who see it as a chance to secure a sizeable contract for the two leading shipyards.
If the tender is awarded, it could boost the domestic defence manufacturing sector and reinforce India’s strategic autonomy in naval procurement.
