The Indian Defence Ministry has announced the operational readiness of Bhargavastra, a first‑of‑its‑kind indigenous counter‑swarm drone system that can intercept hostile drones up to 5,000 meters.

India’s Defence Ministry today confirmed that Bhargavastra, the country’s first indigenous counter‑swarm drone system, is now operational. The system is designed to detect, track and neutralise hostile drones flying at altitudes as high as 5,000 meters.

Bhargavastra employs a combination of high‑frequency radar, electro‑optic sensors and autonomous interception drones that can engage multiple targets simultaneously. According to officials, the platform can be deployed from ground bases or naval vessels, providing a flexible response to aerial threats.

Strategically, the system is expected to enhance India’s air defence posture along sensitive borders and maritime zones where adversary drones have been increasingly used for surveillance and potential attacks.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said the technology has undergone rigorous testing and will be integrated into existing air defence networks within the next few months.
