India to Mandate Automatic Emergency Braking in All New Passenger Cars by 2030

A draft regulation proposes that every new passenger vehicle sold in India must be equipped with automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems from 2030, aiming to curb road accidents.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is reportedly considering a rule that would require all new passenger vehicles to be fitted with automatic emergency braking (AEB) technology from 2030. The move is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce the high number of traffic fatalities in the country.

AEB systems use a combination of radar, lidar and camera sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings. When the system detects an imminent collision with another vehicle, pedestrian or obstacle, it alerts the driver and, if the driver does not react in time, automatically applies the brakes to mitigate or avoid the impact.

Industry analysts say the mandate could accelerate the adoption of advanced driver‑assist features across the Indian automotive market, prompting manufacturers to integrate AEB as a standard component rather than an optional add‑on. The regulation is expected to be finalized in the next few years, giving automakers a transition period to redesign models for compliance.

If implemented, the 2030 deadline would align India with several other major economies that have already introduced similar safety requirements, potentially saving thousands of lives on the nation's roads.
