The government is set to introduce legislation that will jail individuals who supply performance‑enhancing drugs to athletes, aiming to strengthen anti‑doping measures across the country.

New legislation is being drafted to make the supply of prohibited performance‑enhancing substances a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment. The proposal, announced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, seeks to deter the underground market that fuels doping in Indian athletics, boxing, weightlifting and other disciplines.

Under the draft, anyone found guilty of manufacturing, distributing or selling banned substances could face a custodial sentence, the length of which will be determined by the severity of the offence and the quantity involved. The move aligns with recommendations from the National Anti‑Doping Agency (NADA) and international bodies such as the World Anti‑Doping Agency (WADA).

Officials said the measure is intended to complement existing testing and educational programmes, creating a legal deterrent that targets the supply chain rather than only the athletes. The draft is expected to be presented to Parliament later this year for debate and approval.

If enacted, the law would place India among a growing number of nations that have criminalised doping supply, signalling a tougher stance against cheating in sport and protecting the health of athletes.

The initiative has drawn attention from sports federations, who welcomed the stronger punitive framework, while legal experts cautioned that clear definitions and enforcement mechanisms will be crucial for its effectiveness.
