India voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to end its embargo on Cuba, marking a diplomatic stance on the long‑standing trade restriction.
On Thursday, India joined a majority of UN member states in voting for a General Assembly resolution that urges the United States to lift its embargo against Cuba. The resolution, adopted by a vote of 140 in favour, 13 against and 33 abstentions, calls for the U.S. to end the trade and travel restrictions that have been in place since the 1960s.
India’s decision reflects its long‑standing support for sovereign rights and non‑interference in the domestic affairs of other nations. The country has previously voiced opposition to unilateral sanctions that it views as counterproductive to global cooperation.
The resolution follows a series of diplomatic efforts by Cuba and its allies to seek a broader international consensus. While the U.S. has maintained the embargo, it has also signaled a willingness to engage in dialogue, making the UN vote a significant diplomatic milestone.
