India sheds ‘Emerging Economy’ label, aims for greater global influence, says DEA Secretary

Deputy Economic Affairs Secretary said India has outgrown the emerging‑economy classification and is seeking a larger role in shaping the international economic order.
New Delhi – The Deputy Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs told TradingView that India no longer fits the ‘emerging economy’ tag and is now positioning itself for a more prominent part in the global economic architecture.
He highlighted that sustained growth, expanding trade links and a larger share in global value chains have shifted India’s status toward that of a mature, high‑income market.
The official added that the shift will translate into greater participation in multilateral forums, more influence over international financial rules and a push for reforms that reflect India’s economic weight.
