India Rejects China’s Bid to Rename Arunachal Places

India has formally declined Beijing’s proposals to rename locations in Arunachal Pradesh, reaffirming the state’s status as an integral part of India.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday, rejecting China’s recent attempts to rename several places in Arunachal Pradesh. The move follows a series of Chinese maps and documents that list the region under the name ‘South Tibet’ and propose new toponyms.
In its response, the Indian government reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is a sovereign part of India and that any unilateral renaming by China is a violation of international norms. The statement also called for a peaceful resolution of the border dispute through dialogue.
The dispute over Arunachal has persisted since the 1962 Sino‑Indian war, with China claiming the territory as part of Tibet. India has consistently maintained that the region is an integral part of its territory, a position upheld by the Indian constitution and international law.
Diplomatic channels remain active, with both sides engaged in talks aimed at de‑escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control. The latest renaming proposal is seen as a diplomatic provocation by India.
