India has formally highlighted inaccuracies in a United Nations map released on July 1, which shows Arunachal Pradesh as an independent entity and misrepresents the Aksai Chin border.

New Delhi lodged a diplomatic protest on Wednesday after the United Nations published a political map on July 1 that, according to Indian officials, contains several territorial inaccuracies. The map was widely circulated during deliberations on a UN General Assembly resolution concerning the South Asian region.

The Indian objection centres on two key anomalies. First, the map depicts Arunachal Pradesh as a separate, sovereign state bordering Assam and China, contrary to India's claim that the region is an integral part of the nation. Second, the representation of the Aksai Chin area—claimed by India but administered by China—does not align with India's official position on the Line of Actual Control.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal note to the UN, urging the organization to rectify the errors and to ensure that future cartographic products reflect internationally recognised borders. The note emphasized that any depiction suggesting otherwise could undermine the country's territorial integrity.

The United Nations has not yet issued a public response, but the incident adds to a series of recent cartographic disputes involving disputed borders in South Asia. Analysts say the episode underscores the sensitivity of map-making in geopolitically contested regions and the importance of diplomatic coordination before releasing such documents.
