The free trade agreement between India and New Zealand has officially come into force, opening new avenues for trade and investment in sectors such as agriculture, dairy and technology.
The free trade agreement (FTA) signed by India and New Zealand has entered into force after ratification by both parliaments. The agreement, which was concluded last year, removes tariffs on a wide range of goods and eases regulatory barriers for services.
Officials say the FTA will deepen economic ties, with early estimates suggesting a potential uplift of bilateral trade by several billion dollars over the next decade. Key sectors expected to benefit include dairy, meat, horticulture, information technology and renewable energy.
Both governments have pledged to set up joint committees to monitor implementation and to address any trade‑related issues promptly. The move is also seen as a strategic step to diversify supply chains and to strengthen cooperation in the Indo‑Pacific region.
Industry bodies welcomed the development, noting that New Zealand’s high‑quality agricultural products and India’s large consumer market create complementary opportunities for exporters on both sides.
