India, Liberia Launch UN Shipping Safety Group at UNGA High Level Week

India and Liberia have inaugurated the 'Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers' during the UN General Assembly’s High Level Week in New York, signalling a joint effort to protect maritime workers.
The Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers was officially launched on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s High Level Week in New York, with India and Liberia as the founding members.
The new forum aims to strengthen cooperation among member states, international organisations and the shipping industry to prevent attacks on vessels and protect seafarers from piracy, armed robbery and other maritime threats.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who attended the launch, urged the international community to take decisive action against attacks on seafarers and called for enhanced security measures at sea.
Both countries said they will work closely with the United Nations and other stakeholders to develop guidelines, share best practices and support capacity‑building initiatives for maritime safety.
