India launches its first natural‑gas powered passenger train

The Indian Railways inaugurated the country's first passenger train powered by compressed natural gas, marking a milestone in eco‑friendly rail transport.
The Indian Railways officially put into service its inaugural passenger train that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). The launch, announced on 28 September, is being hailed as a pioneering step toward cleaner railway operations across the nation.
Designed to replace diesel locomotives on selected routes, the CNG‑powered train is expected to cut carbon emissions by up to 30 percent, according to railway officials. The fuel, sourced from domestic natural‑gas reserves, also promises lower operating costs and reduced air‑pollution in densely populated corridors.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, present at the ceremony, said the project aligns with India's commitment to the Paris Agreement and the government's broader push for sustainable transport. He indicated that similar CNG units will be rolled out on additional routes over the next two years, subject to performance assessments and infrastructure readiness.
The initiative follows earlier trials of alternative‑fuel locomotives, including electric and bio‑fuel models, and reflects a growing emphasis on diversifying energy sources for the rail network.
