The government has released a step‑by‑step guide for victims of online fraud, outlining actions to take when their bank accounts are frozen.

Online fraud incidents have surged in India, prompting authorities to issue a comprehensive guide for affected users. The document advises victims to immediately report the fraud to the local police and to file a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell. It also recommends contacting the bank to request a temporary freeze on the account, providing proof of the fraudulent activity.

If a bank account is frozen, the institution must notify the account holder and the RBI within 48 hours. The guide explains that the account holder can appeal the freeze by submitting a written request and supporting documents to the bank’s grievance cell. In cases where the account is permanently blocked, the victim can seek a judicial review under the Banking Regulation Act.

The guide stresses the importance of preserving digital evidence, such as screenshots, transaction records, and communication logs, as they are crucial for investigations. It also highlights the role of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) in filing complaints and tracking their status.

Finally, the government urges banks to enhance fraud detection systems and to provide clear communication channels for customers to report suspicious activities. The initiative aims to protect consumers and restore confidence in digital banking services.
