India Faces Technical Hurdles to Show Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ as Shot

✍️ Business Standard 🗓 17 Jul 2026, 03:04 PM 👁 2

Indian cinemas lack the equipment and infrastructure to present Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in its original high‑resolution, high‑frame‑rate format, forcing compromises in the viewing experience.

Christopher Nolan’s latest feature, ‘The Odyssey’, was shot using a combination of high‑resolution cameras and a high‑frame‑rate workflow that delivers a cinematic experience unmatched by conventional releases. The director’s intent was to preserve every visual nuance in a format that demands cutting‑edge projection and sound systems.

To faithfully reproduce the film’s aesthetic, Indian theatres would need 4K projectors, HDR‑capable screens, and Dolby Atmos or similar immersive audio setups. However, a majority of multiplexes across the country still operate with 2K or 3D projection units and standard surround sound, leaving a significant gap between the film’s technical specifications and the available infrastructure.

Because of these limitations, distributors have warned that ‘The Odyssey’ may have to be downscaled or presented in a modified format for Indian audiences. This compromise could dilute the director’s vision and affect the overall viewing experience, sparking debate among cinephiles and industry stakeholders.

The situation highlights a broader challenge for Indian cinema: aligning the rapid technological advancements in filmmaking with the country’s exhibition capabilities to ensure audiences receive films as the creators intended.
