India Enacts Deepfake Regulations to Curb Digital Misinformation

India has introduced new regulations targeting deepfake content, aiming to curb the spread of manipulated media and strengthen digital safety.
India has rolled out a comprehensive set of regulations designed to address the growing threat of deepfake content across digital platforms. The new rules require content creators and distributors to disclose the use of synthetic media and to obtain prior approval for certain types of deepfake material.
Under the legislation, platforms that fail to comply can face fines, mandatory takedowns, and, in severe cases, suspension of services. The government has also set up a dedicated oversight body to monitor enforcement and to coordinate with technology firms.
The move comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance digital safety, which includes anonymous cyber‑crime reporting mechanisms and a Rs. 132 crore capacity‑building program for cyber‑security professionals. Together, these measures aim to create a safer online environment for users across India.
