The Census of India will begin its second phase on December 1, 2023, covering all states and union territories.

The Census of India will start its second phase on December 1, 2023, following the completion of Phase 1 earlier this year. The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs, will oversee the nationwide enumeration.

During Phase 2, trained enumerators will visit households across the country to collect data on population, age, sex, literacy, and other socio‑economic indicators. The census will be conducted in 12 languages to ensure accurate data collection.

The 2023 census is the largest demographic exercise in the world and the first since the 2011 census. Updated figures will help the government plan policies, allocate resources, and monitor development progress.

To prepare for the enumeration, the government has trained thousands of enumerators, deployed digital tools for data capture, and launched a public awareness campaign to encourage participation.
