The Indian government will launch a new policy to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG) usage, offering subsidies to rickshaw operators and motorbike riders.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has unveiled a comprehensive policy aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG) across the country. The initiative will provide financial incentives to operators of three‑wheelers and motorbike riders, encouraging a shift from petrol and diesel to cleaner fuels.
Under the scheme, rickshaw drivers will receive a subsidy covering a portion of the cost of converting their vehicles to electric or CNG, while motorbike riders will be eligible for a grant to purchase or retrofit their bikes. The government estimates that the policy could reduce urban air pollution by up to 20% within five years.
The policy also outlines support for charging infrastructure, including subsidies for the installation of public charging stations in major cities. Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to meet India’s climate commitments and improve public health.
Industry experts note that the subsidies could spur growth in the domestic EV manufacturing sector and create new jobs in the green technology supply chain.
