India aims for Rs 3 trillion defence production and Rs 50,000 crore exports by 2029

New Delhi – The Indian government has announced an ambitious target to expand the defence sector’s domestic production to Rs 3 trillion and to achieve Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by the end of 2029. The figures were disclosed in a recent statement covered by Business Standard, reflecting the administration’s push to scale up indigenous capabilities.

The targets are part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and to position India as a major player in the global arms market. By boosting local manufacturing, the policy aims to create jobs, foster technology transfer, and strengthen the country’s strategic autonomy.

Officials indicated that the roadmap will involve increased investment in research and development, incentives for private sector participation, and streamlined procurement processes. If met, the goals could double the current defence output and place India among the top exporters worldwide.

The timeline sets 2029 as the deadline for both production and export milestones, giving the industry roughly a decade to mobilise resources, upgrade facilities, and secure international contracts.
