IMD warns of heavy rains across Eastern and Central India as Bay of Bengal system approaches

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning that a weather system moving in from the Bay of Bengal will bring heavy rainfall to several states in eastern and central India over the next few days.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has flagged an incoming low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal that is set to affect a swath of eastern and central Indian states, including Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Bihar. Meteorologists anticipate sustained heavy rain from Thursday through Saturday, with the possibility of localized intense downpours.
IMD’s latest bulletin projects rainfall totals of 50‑100 mm in most districts, while some hilly and coastal pockets could see more than 150 mm. The agency has also warned of potential flash floods in river basins and water‑logged roads, especially in low‑lying areas.
Authorities in the affected states have been instructed to keep disaster response teams on standby, clear drainage channels and issue advisories to the public. Residents are urged to stay updated through official channels, avoid unnecessary travel during peak downpour periods and take precautionary measures to protect property and livestock.
The system is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but the IMD will continue to monitor its progression and issue further updates if conditions change.
