The India Meteorological Department announced plans to replace the ageing weather radar at Chennai Port by 2027 and to install four additional radar stations across Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has unveiled a roadmap to modernise its coastal observation network in Tamil Nadu. The existing weather radar at Chennai Port, which has been in service for several decades, will be decommissioned and replaced with a state‑of‑the‑art system by 2027.

The new radar is expected to feature advanced Doppler technology, higher resolution imaging and automated data processing, enhancing the accuracy of short‑term forecasts and early warning for cyclones and severe thunderstorms over the Bay of Bengal.

In addition to the Chennai upgrade, IMD will commission four supplementary radar units at strategically chosen sites across the state. While exact locations are yet to be disclosed, the network expansion aims to fill current coverage gaps, providing continuous monitoring of weather patterns from the western coast to the interior regions.

Officials indicated that the project will be funded through the central government's disaster management budget and will involve collaboration with domestic technology partners. Completion of the new infrastructure is slated for the latter half of the decade, promising more reliable weather services for residents, maritime operators and agricultural stakeholders in Tamil Nadu.
