IMD issues yellow alert as Mumbai, Thane, Palghar brace for hot, humid weather

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed a yellow alert over several districts of Maharashtra, citing an upcoming spell of unusually hot and humid weather. The alert specifically covers the coastal and suburban regions of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, where temperatures are expected to rise well above seasonal norms.

Meteorologists warn that the combination of high heat and elevated moisture levels could increase the risk of heat‑related illnesses, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and outdoor workers. The department advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours and seek shade whenever possible.

Local authorities in the three cities have been instructed to monitor the situation closely and to be prepared for any emergency response, including the deployment of medical teams and cooling centers if conditions worsen.

The yellow alert remains in effect until the weather pattern stabilises, after which IMD will reassess and issue further guidance as needed.
