The India Meteorological Department has raised an orange alert for several districts in West Bengal as rain, thunderstorms and strong gusts are expected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday upgraded its warning to an orange alert for selected districts of West Bengal, citing the approach of a deep‑low pressure system that will bring intense rainfall, frequent thunderstorms and gusty winds. An orange alert signals a high likelihood of severe weather that could disrupt daily life, damage property and pose safety risks.
Meteorologists expect the system to intensify overnight and persist through the next 48 hours, with rainfall totals of 50‑100 mm in the most vulnerable areas. Strong downdrafts and wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are forecast, raising the possibility of localized flooding, power outages and damage to weak structures.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid non‑essential travel, secure loose objects, and stay indoors during peak thunderstorm periods. Authorities in affected districts have been instructed to activate emergency response teams, clear drainage channels and ensure that relief supplies are on standby.
While the orange alert remains in force, the department will continue to monitor the situation and may issue a red warning if conditions worsen. Citizens are urged to follow updates on official channels and heed instructions from local officials.
