The Indian Meteorological Department has raised an orange warning, signalling heavy to very heavy rain across northern states.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern region of the country. An orange warning is the second-highest level in the IMD’s alert system and calls for heightened vigilance.
The alert covers several northern states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan. Forecast models predict rainfall accumulations ranging from 50 to 150 millimetres over the next 48 hours, with the most intense showers expected during the evening and night periods.
Authorities have been advised to activate emergency response mechanisms, ensure that drainage systems are cleared, and prepare for possible waterlogging and flash floods. The IMD has urged residents to stay updated with local weather bulletins, avoid low‑lying areas, and refrain from non‑essential travel if conditions worsen.
The department will continue to monitor the situation and may upgrade the warning if the intensity of the rainfall increases, urging the public to remain cautious until the alert is lifted.
